Rec-only and medical-only products, and the Rec/Med cart toggle
In Ohio, some products can only be sold to one type of customer:
- Rec-only products can't be sold to medical patients on a medical cart. Examples include infused prerolls and high-dose edibles.
- Medical-only products can only be sold on a medical cart.
You flag these products in the portal, and the POS enforces the flags at the register. When a medical patient wants a rec-only product, the budtender uses the Rec/Med toggle to switch to a recreational cart.
Flag a product as rec-only or medical-only
- In the portal, go to Inventory > Products.
- Open the product.
- Turn on one flag:
- Recreational Only: the product can only be sold on a recreational cart.
- Medical Only: the product can only be sold on a medical cart.
- Save.
Flag many products at once
You can also set either flag on many products at once from the bulk edit page:
- Go to Inventory > Products and open Bulk Edit.
- Select the products.
- Set Medical Only or Recreational Only.
- Save.
Use the Rec/Med cart toggle
When a medical patient wants a rec-only product:
- On the cart, tap the Rec/Med toggle to switch to a recreational cart.
- Add the rec-only products.
- Complete the sale.

The sale is then handled as a recreational sale:
- It uses the recreational purchase limits.
- It's charged recreational taxes, including the 10% excise tax.
- It isn't reported to OARRS.
To buy both medical and rec-only products, the patient needs two separate sales: one on a medical cart and one on a recreational cart.
